How to Shave with an Electric Shaver

Aug 29, 2007 by Gregory Bale

It is the opinion of Rightshave.com that shaving with a normal razor is healthier for your skin. This is due to the way in which the hair is actually cut. Read our The Best Electric Shaver article for all the details. If you want to know how to shave with an electric shaver you must first understand the following:

If you’re using an electric shaver, DO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF ANY OTHER ARTICLES ON THIS SITE – THEY ARE FOR SHAVING WITH A STANDARD RAZOR ONLY.

The reason for the above all-caps warning is because electric razors work best when hair is dry and brittle, not soft and swollen.

Pre-shave Lotion for Electric Shavers

To get the best results from your electric shaver, you want the hair you’ll be shaving to stand up on its end so it can easily enter the shavers head. Pre-shave lotions attempt to do this by severely drying out the hair, stripping it (as well as your skin) of all oils and grease. If you have an existing dry skin problem, alcohol-based pre-shave lotions will almost certainly make the problem worse. While most pre-shave lotions are the same, it’s always wise to follow the exact directions on the bottle. Essentially, you’ll just need to smooth a thin layer anywhere you wish to shave then wait until it’s absorbed by the skin before shaving.

Go Gently

You must let the shaver do the work for you. Grinding it in to your skin in an attempt to get a closer shave will only cause irritation and more ingrown hairs. For a shave that's best for your skin, move the shaver with the direction of the hair’s growth.

Some electric shavers tend to get a little hot while shaving, and skin typically doesn't take well to that. It’s a wise idea to start shaving wherever your skin is most sensitive, before the shaver has a chance to heat up.
Weather you used a pre-shave lotion or not, rinse your skin first with warm water, then, after you've finished shaving, rinse again with cold water. The cold water helps to close the pores of your skin quicker and therefore better protects them against damage. Be sure to pat your skin dry rather than rub it – your skin is still sensitive at this time.

Finally, moisturize with a high quality skin moisturizer. Doing so will seal in moisture and combat the drying effects of alcohol-based pre-shave lotions. You've now learned how to shave with an electric shaver, the right way.
